Fabulous Day

In math today we counted by 2s, 5s, and 10s to 100. We also talked about activities that take a short and long amount of time today and compared the length of time of different activities. If you have time tonight, ask your child which takes a longer amount of time to do, watch a tv show or sing the alphabet song.

In language today we chanted out this week’s word wall words, practiced reading by ourselves and then we started talking about descriptive writing by brainstorming words that we could use to describe snow. Ask your child what word they would use to describe snow. Have your child read this week’s word wall words to you and then tell you a sentence using the word after.

Have a great evening.

Great Day

Today your child came home with one of my PM reading books. These books are leveled in a way that helps your child continue to develop their reading skills. By the end of grade 1 the average grade 1 student should be able to read PM 15. The book sent home with your child is at their instructional level. Please have your child read the book to you. You are not to read the book to them. You can help your child when they come to a word they don’t know, by asking them to look at the pictures, sound it out, read to the end of the sentence and make a smart guess of a word that starts with the first letter and makes sense. One thing we are working on at school is tracking with our finger when we read (putting a finger under the first word and only saying the word that is above the finger). Please encourage your child to track with their finger when they are reading to you. Please return the book the next day so your child can get another book to practice reading. Books will be sent home from Monday to Thursday.

In math today we counted by 2s, 5s, and 10s to 100. We also worked on naming the month that comes before and after certain months. If you have time tonight, please ask your child to name the month that comes before June and the month that comes before January.

In language today we chanted out this week’s word wall words, read a shared reading together called Who Am I. If you have time tonight, please ask your child to read this week’s word wall words and then tell you a sentence using the word off.

In science today we read a little more about energy. We talked about what the sun gives us (light, heat, and makes things grow). Please ask your child what the sun gives us.

Have a great evening.

Wonderful Day

In math today we counted by 2s and 5s to 100 and we also worked on putting the months of the year in the correct order. If you have time tonight, please ask your child to name the months of the year in order and then tell you what month comes before August and what month comes after December.

In language today we chanted out this week’s word wall words and then we reviewed the vowel sounds for the letter u (short sound as in the word umbrella, and long sound is the letter name). If you have time tonight, please ask your child to read this week’s word wall words to you and then tell you a sentence using the word get.

In science we continue to talk and learn about energy. If you have time ask your child what energy is (energy is what makes things work and move) and what is the main source of energy for our planet (the sun).

Have a great evening.
